Correspondence College Degree Evolution to Online Delivery

As the nation's leader in Distance Education and Hybrid Learning since 1890, Penn Foster has served more than 13 million students with our College, Career School, and High School programs. Over the years, the manner in which we deliver education to our students has evolved.

To summarize our history: In 1890 Civil War veteran and newspaper editor, Thomas J. Foster founded the Colliery School of Mines in Scranton, PA. It was a 'mail-order' (now known as correspondence) school teaching safety and engineering skills to mining employees. Quickly students from all around the world began to enroll in courses, and the school became known as the International Correspondence School (ICS). These early correspondence studies became very popular for their convenience, and as demand grew steadily between 1895 and 1940, new programming was created through the Women's Institute of Domestic Arts and Sciences and the United States Marine Corps, and throughout the 1940s we were serving millions of Americans. In 1950, the New Yorker Magazine heralded us as, The Harvard of Home Study Institutions. In 1970 we began offering very specialized Associate Degrees for adults needing a college degree, and in 1990, on our centennial, we celebrated our 10 millionth student! With the dawning of the Internet, Penn Foster began providing time-saving and immediate access to program content, creating a totally new dimension in distance learning and bringing instructors and students together with speed and convenience. The correspondence college degree programs of the past are now delivered 100% online.

In 2003, we began our transition from correpondence school to an online instutition and in 2006 announced our new brand name, Penn Foster College.
